Travel Logistics & Airport Security

Practical planning for cross-border operations.

International trips introduce additional complexity: customs procedures, security screening, time-zone shifts, limited pharmacy access, and unpredictable hotel routines.

Preparation reduces friction.

Airport Security (TSA & Equivalent)

In the United States, pilots and flight attendants may use Known Crew Member (KCM) when available. If KCM is unavailable, or when traveling outside standard crew access channels, traditional security screening applies.

Traveling with insulin, CGMs, and pump supplies is common, but understanding the process helps prevent unnecessary delays.

Practical Considerations

  • Insulin and medical supplies are permitted through security
  • Keep all medical supplies in a dedicated pouch for easier screening
  • Inform the officer if you prefer supplies not go through X-ray
  • CGMs and insulin pumps can often remain attached during screening (always follow manufacturer guidance)
  • You may request a pat-down if preferred

Allow additional time at international checkpoints.

My pump frequently alarms in the AIT scanner. When this happens, I notify the TSA agent, and they typically perform a hand swab at the checkpoint.

Customs & Documentation

When traveling internationally:

  • Keep insulin clearly labeled
  • Carry prescriptions or documentation if traveling extensively or for extended durations
  • Be prepared to answer basic questions if asked

Most customs officers are familiar with medical supplies. On occasion, clarification may be needed. Clear organization and straightforward communication reduce confusion.

Goal: Reduce Friction During Security

International operations and security environments introduce variables.

Preparation removes unnecessary ones.

The goal is not to control every outcome; it is to eliminate avoidable disruptions. Structured planning supports smoother transitions across borders and through checkpoints.

This guide reflects operational experience and general travel considerations. Always follow current TSA, international security, airline, and medical guidance.
